Forgotten box - The box wasn’t on the inventory list.
It was small — wood, hand-carved, and tied shut with a velvet ribbon. On the lid: “For the one who remembers me.”
Inside: A child’s tooth. A ballet slipper keychain. A music box mechanism (disconnected, but wound tight). And a scrap of cloth embroidered with the number: 669.
No fingerprints. No dust. The air around it smelled faintly of cinnamon and rot.
A note was tucked beneath it all, written in uneven block letters:
“Not everything taken stays gone.”“If he gave me his heart, why can’t I feel it?”“Find the rest.”
The box is now missing. But its contents were catalogued. Mostly.
